Datacom has built a strong business in the Local Government vertical, conducting projects for most local authorities in New Zealand, as well as regional authorities and council controlled organisations.
Our relevant track record, key relationships and our knowledge and understanding of local government drivers and needs enables us to add significant value.
One of our key objectives is to promote and facilitate learning and knowledge sharing across Local Government. We do this on individual projects and also projects involving several regional authorities, such as IRIS.
In recent years Datacom has won major awards for our work in Local Government:
- 2010 ALGIM Web Awards – Best Redeveloped website (both judged and People’s Choice divisions)
- 2010 ALGIM Web Awards – Best new feature website (both judged and People’s Choice divisions) for online consenting service.
- 2010 Sitecore Best Government Site Australia / New Zealand.
- 2009 Microsoft Services Ready Partner of the Year.
- 2009 ALGIM Innovation award for online consenting service.

Our Local Government products include:
• Citizen Services Platform (CSP)
At North Shore City Council, we have used Microsoft Citizen Service Platform, as part of an ongoing digital local government strategy, to rollout a fresh new website and create a customer services portal. Now customers, council staff and key stakeholders are able to benefit from increased efficiencies and reduced costs.
The solution has resulted in a convenient, single point of access for residents through which they are able to complete all their council-related transactions and access all relevant information in a fraction of the time. In addition, the council is able to reduce costs and better serve residents through streamlined processes and more efficient use of staff time. Because we’ve done this before, we can save our customers from having to reinvent the wheel. We have, ready to go, a significant number of customisable and rapidly configurable features (such as web parts, content templates, page layouts and workflows) as well as reusable architecture developed in accordance with Microsoft recommended best practice.
This project won the award for Microsoft Services Ready Partner of the Year at the recent Microsoft Partner Awards, in a field of over 100 entries.
• Online Consenting System (OCS)
The OCS offers a paperless, online platform to process consents electronically across the entire consenting lifecycle. For example, most of North Shore City Council’s key partners such as GJ Gardner and Universal Homes now use the OCS as the preferred mode of submitting consent applications.
OCS has revolutionised the way the consents are received and processed by a Building Consenting Authority (BCA) such as NSCC. It won the prestigious ALGIM Excellence in Innovation Award for 2009 - an award that identifies projects that have been proven to display significant technological advances and have had positive, important effects on construction to improve quality and reduce costs.
• Integrated Regional Information System (IRIS)
The Integrated Regional Information System (IRIS) will create a core business application for six regional government organisations in New Zealand, charged with management of the environment and resources in compliance with NZ legislation and regulations.
The IRIS system will comprise a set of Council-specific functional modules: Consents, Compliance and Environmental Monitoring, Bio-Security, Bio-Diversity, Land Management, Contacts, Request for Service, Environmental Results, and RMA Plan Submission Consultation.
As development partner, Datacom is contributing years of experience in local government, and also gatherinag learnings that come from such a unique, large-scale collaboration.
